The Scituate Cultural Council was proud to support the "Creative Crosswalk" painting project that recently took place in Scituate. This project was a true collaboration between the Town of Scituate, the local artist community, and the public. Over 200 Scituate residents responded to our community input survey last fall, indicating an interest in public art projects. We were very pleased to support such a visible project this year and hope this will encourage more applications for public art grants in future years! The Scituate Cultural Council (SCC) is part of the Massachusetts Cultural Council's (MCC) Local Cultural Council Program - the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation. Each year, the MCC distributes funds to the SCC, which grants these funds to local individuals, schools and organizations in support of arts, humanities, and interpretive science projects for the benefit of Scituate residents. The SCC is comprised of volunteers appointed by the Scituate Selectmen and are responsible for reviewing grant applications and awarding monies. The most-recent grant cycle awarded 13 grants, totaling $4,600, for projects benefiting the Scituate community featuring a wide range of cultural disciplines, including: Cultural Education and Exchanges ($1,600); Festivals ($850); Interpretive Sciences ($400); Literature ($250); and Performing Arts ($1,500). The SCC partnered with the Town of Scituate, the Scituate Harbor Business Association, and the Scituate Arts Association in spearheading a successful application process to obtain Cultural District designation for Scituate Harbor, and the SCC will continue to support the Scituate Harbor Cultural District.
